Nature Denatured and Found Again (2019–)
-
flussaufwärts, Große Mühl River
flussaufwärts began as a sound walk along the banks of the Große Mühl River in Upper Austria. Over five summers, from 2011 to 2015, we made progress downstream from the area near Unternberg to the point where the Große Mühl flows into the Danube (Donau). Field recordings where made along the whole pathway that runs alongside the river.

Marcus Kaiser & Joachim Eckl
The project was made in collaboration with Joachim Eckl, whose workspace and gallery (The Station) is located there and who commissioned the work through his organization, heim art. Marcus Kaiser created the architecture we used as listening and playing stations - and documented the work extensively, here. The three of us together designed the events.

Wandelweiser
During 2011 and 2012, the sound walk featured performance by members of the Wandelweiser collective, including Antoine Beuger, Jürg Frey, Marcus Kaiser, Radu Malfatti, André Möller and Kathryn Pisaro..

Installation at the Station
In the next stage of the piece a permanent installation was created on the lower level of The Station, with the work of Joachim Eckl and three pieces from Nature Denatured and Found Again.

Nature Denatured and Found Again (from the booklet designed by Yuko Zama)
In 2019 a 5-disc set, “Nature Denatured and Found Again” was released on Gravity Wave. Each disc contains four 12-minute tracks derived from a single of the installation. Each disc has a theme; all together the piece tells a story about, movement, withdrawal and rejuvenation.

Installation Design by Marcus Kaiser
The five discs of Nature Denatured and Found Again, can be played simultaneously in five different rooms. Marcus Kaiser, Joachim Eckl and I have made plans to create a traveling version of the installation. (In this image, we imagine the evaporation and condensation of water, creating slow rain in one of the rooms.)
