I started the Dog Star Orchestra in 2005, with two ideas in mind. The first was that some of the recently graduated CalArts students might want to remain active in experimental music - and that some concerts in the summer would be a small way to foster that desire. The second grew out of a desire to hear works that friends had made or that came from the experimental music tradition that I wouldn’t hear any other way. It amazes me that the festival developed beyond these beginnings into something that still takes place every summer (we had out 17th festival in 2021) and is now organized by a board of eight people. There is a website. Perhaps someday there will be a proper archive of with documentation. Occasionally the orchestra comes together for other projects: we’ve played twice on Monday Evening Concerts (Los Angeles), at the Göteborg Art Festival (Sweden) and recorded with Taku Sugimoto. Or next non-summer event will be at the Wende Museum on December 3rd, 2021.
